DESIGN WEEK EVENT! 4/9/19
WeMake welcomes New York artist & creative consultant Shawna X .
Known for her vibrant and highly graphical images, @shawnax creates work for clients in music, fashion, technology, and across mediums in digital, spatial and motion spaces.
Shawna has collaborated on unique experiences with clients such as Adidas, Adobe, Ghostly International, New Yorker, and Warby Parker. She enjoys projects discussing cultural identity, sexuality, and the modern creative process.

WeMake is excited to bring Shawna to Portland for an intimate conversation at @mississippistudios

WORKSHOP! Our studio mates Make & Mary is having two full days of basket weaving workshops on 3/8-3/9 in our headquarters @tillamookst .

Guest teacher Alexa Rene' Rivera of @wovn.country , a basket weaver visiting from Burlington, Vermont will teach a brief history of basketry and it's relationship between people and what they carry. For Friday nights workshop attendees will create medicine baskets and on Saturday Garden Harvest baskets (pictured here)

INSPIRED BY: Mixed media artist, Deborah Roberts.

Looking at the work of @rdeborah191 you must look through multiple layers, double meanings and symbols. Her process combines found and manipulated images with hand drawn and painted details to create hybrid figures. These figures often take the form of young girls. “ I’m interested in the way young girls symbolize vulnerability but also a naïve strength. The girls who populate my work, while subject to societal pressures and projected images, are still unfixed in their identity. Each girl has character and agency to find their own way amidst the complicated narratives of American, African American and art history. “

Roberts’ artist statement really gives insight on the notion of beauty.– “My art practice takes on social commentary, critiquing perceptions of ideal beauty. Stereotypes and myths are challenged in my work; I create a dialogue between the ideas of inclusion, dignity, consumption, and subjectivity by addressing beauty in the form of the ideal woman, the Venus. By challenging Venus, my work challenges the notion of universal beauty—making room for women of color who are not included in this definition.” #africanamericanart

INSPIRED BY: French artist Koralie creates vibrant, absorbing wall art and works on canvas that combine influences from both traditional and contemporary Japanese art, African and English history.

It is said that @____koralie____ uses a character in her work that is fully integrated into her backgrounds.

Koralie began in the field of architecture. In the early 2000s, she embarked on her career in art. She discovered graffiti in Toulouse, France which inspired her to start painting on walls throughout the city. She has since painted murals in Tokyo, New York, Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Copenhagen, Paris, Philadelphia, Hô Chi Minh, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Bangkok, London, Cape Town.
She draws additional inspiration from her travels around the world and is particularly interested in folk customs, emblematic monuments and animist rituals, which offer an aesthetic richness full of a variety of symbols.
