All of us long for an idea of home. A place of love, security and community. Many people flock to Portland because this sense of place and feeling of home is pervasive in this city. Coming Home is a meditation on the feeling of home that so many people, having been lost elsewhere, find when they come to Portland. This piece is designed in the shape of a Western Meadowlark, the state bird of Oregon; it seemed only fitting.
I chose to scar the piece, delineating some of the markings on the Western Meadowlark. Nothing is perfect; Portland and this piece are no exception. So many people are fighting hard to stay in this community. However, the changing landscape of the city is forcing many people to question whether they can continue to call this lovely and magical place home or be forced to move elsewhere.
